Why you need an excellent CV when you apply for a placement.
This is what one leading company has said about graduate application:
‘We were disappointed with the overall standard of the application we received this year. Out of the 700 applications, about 90% were badly informed, badly presented, and stood little chance of gaining the candidate even an interview,
…Applications from graduates received by this company do clearly indicate that the vast majority has no concept of presenting themselves well on paper, or of the need to stand out and attract attention even at this early stage.
…This is often little attempt to maximise the quality and achievements which the candidate has to offer, and when the application does go beyond the mere mechanical recital of biographical and academic detail, it is often only to lapse into clichéd generalities which do far more harm than good.’
The purpose of a c.v. is to persuade a potential employer to interview you for a job.
Your curriculum vitae (CV) is your passport to an interview and hence to securing a job. It is vital that your CV is very well presented and that the content ‘sells’ you in a positive way.
What we require on your CV
There is more than one way of designing a c.v.
We have found that 2 sides of A4 paper, organised as follows, is effective for most students looking for a job:
• page 1: Neat, clear lists that summarise your academic and employment history, plus other key information such as where you can be contacted.
• page 2 A personal statement that draws the employers attention to your transferable skills, and to relevant personal qualities that would be of interest to an employer.
To start to create a good c.v in this format follow the steps below.
You will probably already have a c.v., and possibly some past personal statements and job applications. Find these and use them as resources and starting points in the steps that follow.
www.6park.com

Step 1: Page 1 - The factual summary page
This is the easiest page, so draft it first. It will also serve as a memory jogger when you come to write the second page.
brief personal & factual details
Please refer to the standard layout shown at the end of this document. www.6park.com

o Your name: your full name, with your surname highlighted at the top of the CV www.6park.com

o Currently studying at Northumbria University
e.g. BSc (Honors) Computing for Business, 2nd year
o Nationality: e.g. British, Irish, etc.
o Address (home): your permanent address and telephone number www.6park.com

o Address (term): only include this if its different from your home address
o Education: www.6park.com

o Do this in reverse order, starting with your current course.
o Give dates (e.g. 9/1997 – 6/2003)
o For your current course, list the modules you are studying and give results if known, don’t use the university codes ( e.g. Foundations of human computer interaction (65%))
o Give secondary school or college names and dates and what qualifications you obtained there. Put, for example, ‘A’ levels before GCSEs and put your best results at the front of each list. If you are short of space because you have A levels and lots of GCSEs then it is not necessary to list all GCSEs, but do mention English Language and Maths (if you’ve got them) e.g.
A level Computer Studies (B), Physics (C)
8 GCSEs including English Language (B), Mathematics (D) etc.
o It is a matter of opinion whether failed exams should be included or not, but do so if their omission would be obvious (e.g. you stayed at school until 18 but don’t appear to have taken any A levels).
o Summary of technology knowledge and experience:
o A simple list of technical things you know or will know. This is intended to allow employers to quickly check if you have any required specialist skills in advance of the job, so lay it out neatly and avoid explanations which can be made on the back of the form.
o Check with your unit tutors to find out exactly what you will be dong this year (you may have to amend this section later once you have got the teaching schemes for each unit), and add things you’ve picked up elsewhere, e.g.:
Operating systems: MS-DOS, UNIX, Windows, and Linux.
Programming languages: Visual, C++, Perl, Visual Basic, Pascal etc.
Word processing, spreadsheets, DTP
Internet tools
Databases
Unified modeling language, rapid application development, interaction prototyping
o you can talk in more depth about any technology experience or highlights from your course in your personal statement on page 2 of the CV.
o Employment: www.6park.com

o If you have earned money from directly course-related work, list it here e.g.:
Full time-employment
Paid contracts for work such as repairing people’s computers or setting up web sites etc.
o other experience & training:
o A simple list part-time work, summer jobs, voluntary work etc. Shelf stacking at the supermarket on Saturdays is important (if it’s the only work you’ve done) because it shows that you are employable. And have gained valuable transferable skills.
o Include training courses even if they were just a few hours (e.g. Assistant warden, YHA, summer 2006, 2007 – 2 days “Welcome Host” customer relations training)
o This section is meant to be a brief summary to allow employers to see at a glance what previous work experience you have. If you’ve got a lot of work experience, put down only the most recent or the most relevant. (Modify the heading to “Other experience and training includes:”)
o If you have other experiences that might catch the eye, list these here e.g.:
Participant in Great North Run 2007
Drummer in a band, occasional public performances. 2005 - present.
Active member of British Red Cross. 2004 - present
Voluntary webmaster for rock climbing club. 2006-7
o Mention any languages, other than English that you speak e.g.;
Fluent in French, some German etc.
When you have done all this you will probably have too much to fit well onto a page without it all becoming difficult to read. Keep revising and refining how you express the information and how you lay it out until it fits concisely and neatly on the page. You will probably have to miss out some of the detail you originally drafted.
www.6park.com

Step 2: Self assessment – gathering information for the contents of page 2
Don’t bother yet about the exact words you will use in your personal statement.
Spend some time doing and reflecting on the following in private or share ideas with your friends or family.
Write down some rough notes and answer the following questions:
a) – your interests in specialist area
• Why have you chosen to pursue a career in …….././.?
• Why did you decide to enrol on this course?
• What do you hope to get out of this job?
• What aspects of specialist area are you best at?
• What aspect of specialist area are you most interested in?
i.e. from a career point of view.
• What technical skills have you developed, or will have developed by the time you go on working?

b) – your transferable skills
Employers will be very interested in your personal qualities, not just your computing knowledge and interest. Many skills from other aspects of your life are very relevant here – skills can be ‘transferred’.
So, drawing on any previous experience from school (projects, clubs, sports, responsibilities etc.), college (similarly), work (part time jobs included), hobbies, interests, voluntary work etc., what evidence can you give that:
• You get on well with other people and can work as part of a team?
• You can communicate effectively, verbally and in writing?
• You can manage your time effectively and work to deadlines?
• You can work in a systematic, methodical way and to a high standard?
• You can follow instructions carefully, and are reliable?
• After initial direction, you can work within minimum supervision?
• You are enthusiastic and self motivated
• You can learn quickly, e.g. new programming languages, etc
• You can think creatively, and suggest new ways of solving problems?
• You have, or are developing, a good knowledge and understanding of computer applications in business and/ or industry?
• You could work with users and clients of the computer systems, providing a professional image on behalf of your employers?
Think especially about when you have led or helped to organise an activity. www.6park.com

Note – you may not be able to say something positive to all of the above questions, but you should make an effort. Few people have all of these qualities – you should assess your strong points and emphasise them.
c) – personal summary
Summarising your answers to the above questions, consider:
• What are your strengths and most ‘saleable’ skills/attributes/experience? www.6park.com

• What are your weaknesses? www.6park.com

• You can leave your weaknesses out and only feature your strengths, or you can mention them, but if you do make sure you present them as challenges that you intend to do something about.
www.6park.com
